On Thursday, I chaperoned Gabe's class field trip to a farm on the edge of Queens County, where the kids were able to pet animals, milk cows, take hay rides, and learn about farming. Gabe was SO excited to ride on the bus and it was so nice to hang out with the other parents and see the kids have a great time. Luckily we had information about the trip two months ago, so I was able to call in the troops for help with Anna. (Grandma came from Ohio, and it was awesome!) While her and Anna held down the homestead, Gabe and I headed out for the day. It was the first time I've been on a school bus since... probably high school. I was amazed at how they now have seat belts, built-in air conditioning, and the windows no longer go down all the way. We sat all the way in the back, which is where all the "cool kids" used to sit when I was school. And I guess you could say old habits die hard, because I had a deck of cards in my purse, ready to teach all the kids the awesome game of Euchre, but instead had to settle with "Go Fish" on Lightning McQueen cards. At one point in my seventh grade year of middle school, we had an entire Euchre tournament on my bus route, and since my grandparents were crazy about the game and I played just about every weekend with all of their friends, I was winner. (As you can tell, I still hold this feat in high esteem.) I only hope I can pass down the amazing game of Euchre to Gabe, but just not yell at him about calling trump as loud as my Pap Christopher used to yell at me or any of his other grandkids, who could be a bit crazy to play with. I am not sure how we succeeded at our card tournament on the back of that bumpy bus on those old country roads, but we did... Good memories.
