Loves Her Books

Anna's been doing awesome with her ABA therapies. Our therapist was able to figure out a way to teach Anna how to turn the pages of a book, which has never been possible with her limited hand use, especially since she "lost" her ability to self-feed. Heavier books are the easiest (think of those thick books with the almost-cardboard-like pages) or books that are laminated. Our therapist velcro'ed the back of the books so that they would stay on her "desk" which also had strips of velcro. This way, we velcro the book down so it is stable, and she can turn the pages. Anna's been working very hard for about a month at turning the pages, and little by little she is getting better. As with anything Rett, some days are better than others. The day I took this photo, she turned through the whole book page-by-page with no problems. Last night, she couldn't grasp just one page and would flip two or three together at a time, which frustrated her immensely, so we were all on deck to help her through it.

I am thinking that for Christmas, laminated family photo books (like the one Grandma made, above) or thick books with Dora, Elmo or any princess theme are exactly what we need to stock up on. Maybe Gabe can relay the message to Santa for Miss Anna.

Wow. That is truly amazing. You are going to make Grandma's day when she read this. Expect more books. But the next one will be Gabe focused, but I'm sure Anna will still love it.
