A Quick Escape

We've been doing a great job of getting out of the city on weekends, and exploring places nearby. It makes the summer here much more fun! One thing my geographically-challenged mind didn't realize was how close we are to the ocean and the many people-friendly beaches.

I found out about Long Beach, past the Rockaways in Nassau County, a mere 20 miles from our humble abode... A little over 45 minutes later we were parking in the cutest little beach town with a 2.2-mile boardwalk full of eateries and shops and kid-friendly parks and (Free!) public access to one of the cleanest beaches I've ever seen! There were even lifeguards. White sand, clean water, families everywhere... It was quite idyllic. We stayed for a little over 2 hours, playing in the waves, collecting sea shells, building a sand castle, and enjoying the sun without the oppressive "city heat." There's nothing better than an ocean breeze on a hot day.

Gabriel met a really bossy 4-year old girl friend, whose name was (what else?) Gabrielle! They shared more in common than just the sound of their names...

"This is my sea shell."
"No, this is MINE."
"Well I want it."
"No, it's MINE."

My primary instinct was to stick up for my kid but I wanted them to dual it out and see what happened. Gabe took the high or low road depending on which way you look at it.

He took the sea shell, cleaned it off in the water, and quit talking to her.
