"Hazy, hot and humid don't even begin to describe the heat in the city today. Temperatures are soaring and heat and smog advisories are in effect." -- NY1 broadcasterI figured a picture of Wednesday night's Billy Joel set during "We Didn't Start The Fire" was a great segway into the two topics I am addressing during this blog. First of all, I understand the only thing this picture depicts is a lot of yellow light and a drunk guy in a white shirt and a bit of the jib (type of camera) arm if you look closely, but bare with me. It's HOT in NYC today!!!
As images of of sweaty people flashed over the television screen during NY1's afternoon broadcast (it was either NY1 or soap operas) they notified people that by calling 3-1-1, you can find the nearest "cooling center." Good for the city for setting these up. It makes me soo thankful for my living room's A/C unit.
I thought I was just being a big baby when I walked outside today and automatically felt miserable, but alas, I was not. There's even an advisory for seniors and children under 5 to stay inside.
My thoughts go out with the guys outside, especially my hubbalub, who is setting up again for Billy Joel's second concert of the week, as part of the "Last Double Play at Shea" at Shea Stadium (where the Mets play, for any non-New Yorkers or non-baseball fans out there). Apparently the Beatles first played there in 1965, and now Billy Joel will be the last.
This makes so much more sense to me now... After going to Wednesday night's show compliments of Manolicious who is so awesome and grabbed me a pass, I couldn't get why Billy Joel kept going in and out of his hits as well as peppering the show with Beatle's classics... I just thought he was a fan? Well, thanks to NY1, the local news station here, it all makes sense to me now, 2 days after the fact!
Beatles = 1st people to play at Shea
Billy Joel = last person to play at Shea
Hence, Billy Joel playing Beatle's classics during his "Last Double Play at Shea."
(And, again, for those non-New Yorkers or non-baseball fans other there, Shea Stadium is being torn down and the Mets are moving to a new field next season, named Citi Field.)
I am really surprised I know about any of this, really, since I tend to live in my urban bubble in Astoria with weekly trips to Brooklyn for work or Manhattan for doctor appointments or light shopping or dining.
So here I am with my Billy Joel pass on Anna's 35-week bump, listening in on Manny's headset to the director and everything, and loving it. It was a great eye-opening experience into the world of production.
Doesn't he look cute?
Billy Joel is equally cute, with that bald head and powerful voice. He was so amazing. I watched his presence on stage, and I just wanted to put him in my pocket and take him home with me. Or maybe go summer with him in the Hamptons. He just seemed so cool. But, I'll have to put that on hold for now and reminisce of my time spent with Billy Joel, and 55,000 others at the sold-out show. Here he is on-screen, next to the boxed off area Manny and his dad were with their camera equipment. I should've brought my camera but the only thing I had was my cell phone.
