"Being right on taxes, education, health care, immigration and the economy fails to make up for the error of disregarding the human life. The finest health and education systems, the fairest immigration laws, the soundest economy do nothing for the child who never sees the light of day."
- Bishop Joseph F. Martino, Diocese of Scranton, Pa.
I came across an article in the newspaper today and this bishop from Scranton was quoted on considering life issues when going to the polls. His quote summed up everything I have been mulling over the last 3 months leading up to this election. I voted last week and mailed it to Lake County, Florida, where I am a registered voter. I am happy I am still registered there, I would hate to waste my vote in the liberal state of New York. At least in Florida I can make a difference, it is such a vital state in this election.
This may sound a little far-fetched, but I got chills when I was filling in my vote for president. How lucky we are to live in a democracy to be able to put our beliefs into action, and even if it is only for one day every four years, we are deciding history. There are many things that appeal to me in both candidates, but there also many things I despise. Ultimately, for me, it came down to the Declaration of Independence: Everyone has "the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness..." I could not vote for a man who does not believe in that inalienable right, that right to life.
Andrew Finan from Brooklyn sent this letter to the newspaper I work for and he summed it up beautifully:
"I can’t vote for a candidate who believes in infanticide and then proves it by voting against the Born Alive Infant Protection Act, not once, not twice, but three times.
I can’t vote for a candidate who after reading the following contents of said act: “An alive child born as a result of a failed abortion shall be fully recognized as a human person and accorded immediate protection under the law,” and still would not vote for it.
I can’t vote for a candidate who, even when said act was changed to his liking still would not vote for it.
I can’t vote for a candidate who said from the Senate floor that a fetus of nine months who survives a failed abortion and allowed to live could jeopardize Roe vs. Wade.
I can’t vote for a candidate who’s for the worst kind of murder – infanticide.
I guess I’m just funny that way.
Obama says “Yes we can!”
I say, “No, I can’t!!”"

Happy, non-political blogging to return later!
